Millie Monday

This weekend I took a quick trip up to the MQX show in Manchester, NH.  For some reason  I was less impressed than other years, although I did attend during it’s last three hours, so maybe that was why.  There were some beautiful quilts, but I think I am of the opinion more is just more when it comes to some quilt designs.  Sometimes one just has to hold back, IMO.  Nonetheless, a few did get me to thinking.  There were some lovely quilted plain non-cotton pieces.  It looked like it would be fun to try a quilting design on a different type of material so I pulled out some saris that I happen to have and studied them:

I need to spend some time with a pencil and drawing paper for a while before I can decide for sure.  I’ll also have to determine what function the completed project will have as I don’t like form without function.

So, right now, Millie is colorfully and exotically dressed while I ponder.  Happy quilting and, finally, happy spring!

Wednesdays word: Blur

This week’s Daily Post’s photo challenge word is blur.

I am lucky to listen to live music every day as it floats up to my studio. For this word, B suggested I photograph my hands waving.  Well, that certainly sounded rather bland compared to B’s fingers on the keys, so I entered B’s sanctum and photographed his hands at work.  This is what the playing of Chopin looks like:

As you can see I used a gray card (sweatshirt) on the bottom one for the lighting.  That is why the first one is a bit blown out.  I also had a hard time keeping the plug, which you can see in number one’s reflexion, out of the pictures.  I love the reflection, but I hate the plug.

So that’s it for this week’s word.  Happy blurring!

Millie Monday

I tend to do my quilting at the end of the week and on the weekends so I might have picked the wrong day for Millie’s pictures.  Also, I have a feeling that Millie is going to be wearing much besides quilt sandwiches until I return from Sweden, but we’ll see.  Here’s Millie today:

IMG_0149

There was a bunch of hemming to be done today for B. and Millie is the perfect assistant.  I hate to do alterations/repairs, but everytime I sit down to do some, I enjoy using/learning a different stitch or foot on my sewing machine.  So, perhaps I only think I hate repairs…and forget that I don’t?  There is real satisfaction in seeing the alteration pile disappear or, at least, shrink.

And also, I’ve been working on publicity for our 2015 Art/Quilt Show:

Here’s a picture of the entrance to last year’s show:  OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

As you can see, this is really an art gallery.  It’s a wonderful show.  I think the media doesn’t pay attention to us because they think only women of a certain age quilt.   Media/corporations consider women who are a certain age as uninteresting, and, therefore, we become invisible, even though we are a huge spending power.  I was blindsided by this when I turned 50.  Let me tell you, mediocrity rises to the top in corporate America…but don’t get me started.  I digressed.  Quilters are all ages and there has been a large influx of millenials and gen Xers into our midsts in recent years.  So please get the word out and join us at the show!

And, on a lighter note,  did I mention that I bought ANOTHER carryon suitcase?  I am an addict.  Details to follow, I’m sure.  Happy Quilting!

Wednesday’s Word: Ephemeral

The Daily Post’s weekly photography word is ephemeral.  For me, ephemeral has always meant something similar to the glimpse of a spirit from the corner of my eye;  something barely visible and then not.   This, of course, is impossible for me to capture.  The next best thing would be wisps of fog, moving and changing in a breeze.  Sorry, no such fog here this week.

I know the definition is not quite so confining:  Mirriam-Webster Dictionary: adjective ephem·er·al : lasting a very short time  1: lasting one day only <an ephemeral fever>  2: lasting a very short time <ephemeral pleasures>

Barring the likelihood of capturing a passing wisp, I went outside to photograph a trickle of water that is unlikely to be in the same place tomorrow because the snow will have melted in that spot.  But I found I wasn’t into kneeling down in the muck to get an interesting and stable photograph.  It is then that I recalled a tip and changed my tactic.

Last week at our local camera club, David H. Wells was the speaker.  He was extremely informative, entertaining and has taken some amazing photographs.  Check out his website here.  One of the things he said was to use gray to help with the lighting.  He often doesn’t use a gray card, but instead he balances the light by focusing on worn gray asphalt, which is in the same light as his subject.  He finds this helpful for most spontaneous shoots because asphalt, unfortunately, is ubiquitous.  So I decided I was not going to be mean to my knees and kneel on the asphalt surrounding the trickle of water.  I switched to our now filthy, but disappearing snow.  Initially, there was a sharp contrast in the light, but by the time I understood what I was doing with the gray exposure, the sharp contrast between the sun and shade had disappeared.  It took me three sets of photographs to finally come up with the right light simply because I hadn’t understood the principle.  Basically, one initially focuses on the gray asphalt.  Then, the settings to have a balanced exposure on the gray are set: ISO, f-stop, and shutter speed.  These settings are not changed when the camera is pointed at the subject.  With these settings the camera is focused on the subject and the photograph is taken.  I need to seriously practice this some more.  You will note that I balanced the exposure, but my f-stop is extremely low, basically narrowing the focus, which is possibly what I might have chosen, but it would have been nice to have considered the whole spectrum.  So here are my two favorites from my final group of photographs:

Click on the photographs to enlarge them.  I do like how you can see the individual crystals of snow before they melt and disappear…not lasting the day: ephemeral.  I am still at the beginning of understanding my camera and photography.  Any suggestions to improve these photographs, other than playing with the f-stop?  I am going to practice this seriously until my travels.

Frankly, I would rather be able to catch the ephemeral image of my mother’s spirit passing by me.  Instead, I will keep the memory of it in my mind’s eye.   Happy quilting or snapping!

Millie Monday

Well, it didn’t take long for Millie to end up almost naked on a Monday morning.  She is hiding behind a little bit of muslin that I was thinking of using for a bit of thread drawing this weekend, but it didn’t happen.  Chores, other play and dinner in the North End intervened.  I’m torn between many things right now, as usual, but in my sewing room I am trying to decide which project of my own I might want to work on.  Hence the procrastination.

So here’s Millie, almost in all her glory: IMG_0057

And now, while I have a few minutes, I think I’ll play with my camera and capture’ephemeral’ for Wednesday’s photo challenge.  Happy quilting or procrastinating!

Weekly Photo Challenge: fresh

fresh

The Daily Post’s weekly photo challenge is ‘fresh’.  As this is late March in urban/suburban New England, there is nothing fresh directly outside my window.  Think very dirty snow.   March is, in fact, my least favorite month, with April coming in at a close second. So instead of going outside, I created a still life with fresh orange juice in mind.  I need to have themed photo projects more often, as it makes me really think about my camera and how I might want to change various settings for a better photograph.  Generally, I concentrate only on shutter speed, aperture, and iso.  This time I considered focus point, metering, white balance, and, hmmm, don’t even know what it is called: ai servo vs one shot, etc.

Anyway, this was fun.   If you have any suggestions for improving this shot please feel free to voice them.  I’m a relative neophyte, who is eager to learn.

J.

PS,  We can’t have one camera out in this house without the other one entering the picture.  B. saw my topic and did his own study.  I think his is decidedly better so I am putting that one up as well.  Here’s his: IMGL0194

He worked the background better, IMO, his lighting is definitive, and his perspective is interesting.  So there you have it, more ‘fresh’.

Weekly Photo Challenge

IMG_3873

I’ve decided to participate in The Daily Post Weekly Photograph Challenge.  This week the challenge was “Walls”.

This photograph was taken in the Yorkshire Dales near Grassington, UK in July 2014.  I hope in the future I will get out and take photographs after the weekly subject is presented…but I love these Yorkshire Dales photographs.

Millie Monday

I’ve decided to post more regularly, so each Monday I am going to post what is on Millie (my APQS Millenium).  Hopefully, she’ll be more dressed than not…

Millie Monday

For the first Monday, I have partially loaded a customer quilt top and backing for quilting “Flamingo Sunset” by Anne Bright.  I’ll finish the load tomorrow and start quilting.

Finally, ready to get back into the studio…

It’s time to get back into the studio.  I’m back from my delayed trip to North Carolina.  The snow has melted from the roof and the leaking has resolved.  Today, I unwrapped Millie and organized my studio.  Here’s the before:

IMG_4726 IMG_4724IMG_4728 IMG_4727What a mess!  When a room isn’t operational, it certainly becomes a dumping ground.  There was very little leakage in this room, but I wanted to be safe so Millie was well wrapped.  I am so excited to be able to get back to working in my studio:IMG_4734 IMG_4735

And…

IMG_4730 IMG_4732I found this fabric for another Don’t Bore Your Baby quilt in North Carolina.  I can’t wait to use it.  Happy quilting!
