Choosing a quilting design…

IMG_3725_2

I’ve been staring at this tee shirt quilt top for a while now trying to decide how to quilt it.  Originally, I was just going to use a simple pantogram.  However, I don’t want to interfer with some of the embossed ‘literature’ and I don’t want my needle to get hung up on this ‘literature’ either.  I do want to quilt the tee shirt sections so the material will keep its shape through many washings.  I’m going back and forth between a very simple, loose edge to edge pattern and the same edge to edge pattern on the tee shirts with a different pattern on the purple sashing.  Any recommendations?  How do you handle quilting tee shirt quilts?

I have picked a camel colored thread so the stitching will not stand out too much.  This is a tee shirt quilt so I don’t plan multiple thread changes.  I’m vacillating between a size 4 and 4.5 needle.

IMG_3727I have loaded the quilt top and backing sans batting onto Millie to force a decision.  I have other things to do so I will need to make a decision, get it quilted and off of my longarm.

Any words of wisdom would be fully appreciated!   Happy quilting!

Quilted Headboard Wall Hanging

As I didn’t want to load a time consuming and/or customer quilt onto my longarm before our guild’s quilt show this weekend, I threw on the wall hanging for behind the guest bed in our home.  I loved the fabric and didn’t want to cut it into pieces.  That happens to me sometimes…I don’t want to ruin the design by cutting into it.  Does that ever happen to you?

I wanted to give this fabric some texture, depth by quilting it.

ImageImage

I used a 50 mm lense, the normal lense for my camera, so some of this is blurry, but I wanted to show the texture as much as anything.  Again, threads are not yet buried.

This is one of my favorite stitching designs by Anne Bright: Double Dutch.  My hands have been bothering me lately, so I changed the way I guide the machine, but that hasn’t affected the stitching at all.  And I like the positioning so much better.

Quilted panels are fun to do and fun to use.  They work wonderfully in baby nurseries.  People pull one favorite fabric from the baby’s crib quilt, have it quilted as in these photographs and use it for valances, drapes, slip covers, etc.  The list is endless.  They really tie the nursery together.

Anyway, thought I’d show you before I’m tied up with the quilt show this weekend.  Please join us:QCShow, 2014, flyer_with images-3

Happy quilting.

Ruler Storage

I have been on the search for a storage system for my large rulers.  The small ones easily fit in a drawer of my cutting table.  However, the others were always in the way.  They were either taking up space on the table or leaned against a wall.  If on the table, they interfered with my cutting.  If against the wall, I was continually stumbling over them.  I’m rather frugal, so many of the systems weren’t worth my pennies and usually took up too much space.  Here’s my solution:

Image

I purchased a few trouser hangers.  I can now hang all of the large rulers on the wall behind the door.  Each subsequent hanger, hangs on the belt hook of the prior hanger.  I can easily change the order so the ruler that I am using is easily accessible.Image

This cost me approximately $12.00.  Problem solved.  Happy quilting!

Spring…

Spring caught me unaware and gardening ensued…as well as the Inspector Maigret Series by the late George Simenon.  So, time spent in my ‘studio’ (still makes me laugh out loud) was limited.  I don’t like gardening, but I love eating on the patio surrounded by flowers on summer nights, so the work had to be done.  Actually, this is the first year I’ve had to do it because I am now ‘retired’ and so can’t ‘have to work’ while B gets the patio ready!  It’s the only downside to retirement that I’ve managed to find…(and it’s not a biggy).

I did cut some tee shirts for a quilt.  I’m still pondering what color will unite these tee shirts.  I’m actually hoping I find a multi-colored fabric.  Do you have any suggestions? What color would you use?

ImageImage

This is my favorite tee shirt of the shirts sent to me for this quilt.  I, too, wanted to live this when I was 22, but alas, no jobs in Maine called to me.  And as it turned out, Boston was the right choice.  Nonetheless, there is a part of me that will always love Maine.

I’m also getting ready to make another Quilt for Baby…I love the giraffes.Image

My photographs are blurry in places.  I apologize.  I’m trying to get use to a normal lens, 50mm, for my DSLR ahead of an upcoming trip to the Yorkshire Dales.   I need to work on the angle a bit due to the limited focus point… As you can see below, the lense works better with vertical presentations.  I’m planning to photograph windows, doors, and stonework (patterns) so this should work well, once I become proficient with the lense.  I know, they are strange subjects for such a beautiful countryside.

And as you can see, it was a tough winter for the English Ivy in my garden.  Happy quilting!

Memory quilt finished

IMG_3539

So I put the custom memory quilt top that I pieced a while ago onto the longarm and it is quilted!  I used medium colored Omni thread and free motioned Anne Bright’s pantogram: Splat.  I’m happy with the result.  IMG_3565

Quilting makes the difference in what otherwise is just pieced fabric.  It is pretty and cozy now.

And here’s the card, thanks to B.

Mechanics and my Millie…

When I was in high school I seriously thought about taking auto mechanics in the vocational school.  However, although I have done many things that females often weren’t encouraged to do in those days, in this case I was rather afraid of the guys because I knew few of them, so I didn’t.  So today I ventured into mechanics for the first time, had fun and was successful.  The power to my Millie was lagging this winter, so APQS told me I needed a Crydom Relay (Crouzet Relay), a filter, and a ground while I was at it.  I took many pictures incase I couldn’t remember how to put it all back together!  The operation began here:

Tools and parts lined up ready for the surgeon, me.

First, one must sedate the patient.  I removed the electonics.

Image

The skin was pealed back…the covers were removed to reveal the relay in question, which is the first box next to the motor on the left.

Here’s an overhead view and then this side view.  I removed and replaced this relay, and added a filter (which didn’t really come with directions).  I closed her up and then added the ground.  I then played with her a bit.  She sounded strong and she purred like a kitten.  Her stitches were still lovely.  I will admit, B. hung around in case I needed calming.  There were times a third hand was helpful, but I remained calm at all times!

Tomorrow, I will be longarming all day long!  Happy quilting!

Accessories, opinions, and fun…

So I had a great time at MQX NH, took some classes from some great teachers, and enjoyed meeting fellow quilters.  It was great to see how far my quilting level had progressed and finally caught my confidence up with my quilting!  Even had thoughts of teaching someday…

I took the bus rather than driving the hour north to Manchester, NH.  The subject seemed to come up frequently.  People always seem to ask ‘how’d you get here?’ when there’s a lapse in conversation.  I don’t quite understand our total dependence on automobiles, and I do wish it would stop, but I’m in the minority, I know.  Anyway, I walked to the T, caught the bus from South Station(Boston) and got off the bus on the same block as my hotel, as a matter of fact, the transportation building was next to my hotel.  So instead of wasting my time in rush hour traffic, I used the wifi on the bus, sat back and relaxed.  Now the reactions, when I said I took the bus, were entertaining.  Most people looked at me as if I were a poor, homeless person…with an APQS Millenium.  The desk clerk and one fellow quilter, seemed to be more aware, as they remarked how environmentally conscious that choice was. So my bus ride was entertaining in more ways than one.

One thing I hear discussed a lot is about all the expenses people have with their businesses.  However, from what I see, this is only true because quilters were buying anything others recommended without thinking of the item’s real usefulness to them.  Everyone has their favorite tools, but unless we realize that each person at these shows is selling their way, not the only way, then one spends too much money buying things they don’t need and won’t use.  Isn’t that the case with life?  Stop trying to buy what everyone else buys, buy only what you need or really want.  Research, research, research…like practise, practise, practise.  Anyway, I stuck to my list.

Image

1. Superior always has a great sale at this show.  However, I only bought neutrals that I needed.  I carried a photograph of the threads that I have in my stash so I would not duplicate them.  And I purchase no specific colors, as we need to actively use the threads so they don’t get old, brittle, etc.  If I need a particular color for a quilt top, I place the order at that time.  I like Omni because it has the look of cotton, but stands up to many, many washings because it is polyester.  And my Millie loves it.  I want people to love and use their quilts, not stare at them.

2.I needed more pantograms and I like Anne Bright…another sale.  I actually bought 4, but one had to be shipped separately.  I wanted some medium density variation in my library.

3. It took me the full three days to find this LA ruler.  On the last day I found this at Gadget Girls.  I don’t understand why they were the only ones who had rulers with measurements in each direction.  I would think that would be a given and all LA ruler companies would have these.

Here’s a better view of the pantograms:

Splat (My favorite, both in name and design)

I also purchased a musical pantogram, received in the mail, and not photographed.  Sorry.  It is not the most fun to quilt as it is rather gimmicky, IMO.  Nonetheless, it might look lovely on a themed quilt for a customer, and it is not about me…at least not all the time!

So that was last week.  This week has been productive as I’ve sewn a wall hanging for a bed headboard, played with my new pantographs, labeled a quilt top for a quilt show (nuts, right?), and ordered some accessories and parts for my Millie.  She’s getting a new Croyden Relay whether she wants one or not!  I so enjoyed my mechanics class last week that I’m thinking of going to the APQS factory in Carroll, IA for a two day mechanics class.  And frankly, I’ll find any excuse to travel…even to Iowa!

So for now, Happy Quilting!

Memory Quilt

As I previously mentioned, I am making a memory quilt for a customer.  I’ve deconstructed the shirts and then reconstructed the material as a quilt top.

IMG_3419IMG_3435After the deconstruction, the piece cutting began.

IMG_3427 IMG_3430Due to all the pieces, I resorted back to using the floor as my design wall for the layout:

IMG_3442

I prefer an accent fabric to provide a little energy to a memory quilt top.  The accent fabric also helps to stabilize the many times washed and slippery shirt material.  I’m going for a randomly pieced quilt top.   Here’s a peek preview of the the sewn top:

IMG_3447This quilt top will be foremost in my mind when I purchase more pantograph designs at MQX NE this week.

AND my bag is packed for MQX.

IMG_3455One Red Sox game and then I’m off.  Happy quilting.

Looking forward…

I raided some stock from my Etsy store because I am going on a trip…and I love to pack.  I’m slightly sorry to say I am not traveling to a foreign country, an adventure of which I am greatly in need,  as I haven’t left the country in 18 months.  That’s unacceptable for me really, but I digress.  I am, nonetheless, looking forward to this year’s MQX NE next week.  And I am packing light once again.  You see I will be taking the bus to Manchester…this makes me laugh, but it also makes it more of an adventure for some reason.  I’m not sure if the bus will be full of quilters or travelers from Logan or…who takes the bus to Manchester in the morning?  When I get off the bus I head right to classes, so the smaller the bag the better.  Then I need to pack a bag to carry the items I purchase home.  I’m fairly good at sticking to my prepared list: thread, pantograph, marker, and a Longarm ruler marked with measurements, but there’s always a first time to deviate, if a deal is irresistible.  I don’t actually think I will have much time to shop while there as I am booked heavy with classes.  I also look forward to being in a hotel filled with quilters.

Here’s what I took from TheQuiltifyShop:

Image

a pouch for my pocket camera and a sun glass case.   Travel/packing is the reason I starting making these products.  Again, going to Manchester, NH…can I call that traveling?  Yes, anytime I get to pack is an adventure!

As I might actually get around to passing out a business card or two, I made this today.

ImageImageImage

I usually put the tag on the inside, because, really, who wants labels on the outside?  However, because this was for me, I figured it didn’t matter.

I am hoping that if I have a container for the cards, I won’t have to hunt for the cards in my purse.  However, I still need to push myself to hand them out.  I was recently standing with an acquaintance who asked if I longarm quilted for others.  I’m not aggressive and I won’t be, but I just hesitantly said ‘yes’ and changed the subject.  My purse then spilled open and out fell two business cards.  This was a sign from the universe telling me to give her a card, but I didn’t.  I just picked them up and put them back into my purse.  This whole scene makes me chuckle.

Do you have difficulty marketing yourself or your products?  Does it really matter?  In my past business life, if I needed a client, I’d lie down on the couch and meditate.  Pretty soon the phone would ring with a new project.  I’m not sure that would work for LAQ.

Do you think word of mouth by customers works the best?  Are you going to MQX NE?

On the agenda for this week is finishing the binding on my autumn jellyroll quilt and to begin cutting pieces for a customer’s memory quilt.  Let’s see how well I do sticking to this plan…   Happy quilting.

When ideas flow…

When ideas flow they are not always related to one’s intentions.  Today, my intent was to finish squaring and binding my autumn jelly roll quilt.  That didn’t happen.  Last week, as I previously indicated, I had finished the ‘Swedish Quilt’ for my recently vacated guest room.  As we all know, one change in a room often leads to another, but they always seem to eventually return to sewing or quilting, for me anyway.   When I put the quilt on the bed, I wasn’t happy with the wood floor, so I spent much of the last three days on my butt restoring and waxing the finish on the floor.  I am thrilled with the result.  I will be proceeding through all the downstairs rooms soon…I say.  I digress. Quilt done, floor done…the room still needed more.  I started with the thought that I needed a pretty pillow for the white wicker chair.  I looked over my stash and realized I had a fabric that I loved, which would be perfect. Image

I had purchased this fabric at a local store’s magnificent close out sale.  I loved the colors and the play of the colors.  Generally, I don’t choose florals, but this one grabbed me.  It’s been sitting in my stash just waiting for it’s purpose.  So I began to make an accent pillow with it.

IMG_3372I used an old, rather ratty cover for the size guide.  I suppose I’m not supposed to admit that!

IMG_3373

I just used one piece of fabric and no zipper, because this will be a lightly used room and I was off project.  I think I’ll just open the hand sewn seam if I decide the cover is worth washing versus making a new cover.

IMG_3374I’m happy with the result.  In fact, I believe I will make a lumbar pillow and a round pillow for the room.  Anyway, when I put this in the room, I turned toward the wall hanging.  The free motion quilted wall hanging in this room, no longer worked.  I had free motion quilted this wall hanging on my Bernina 440 QE two or three years ago, before rooms were juggled to allow for the purchase of my APQS Millenium, when it was still intended for my daughters room and her color scheme.

IMG_3377Here’s a piece of the new fabric hanging behind the bed.  I am going to make one large panel with this fabric, no piecing.  As the fabric is just 44″ wide, I will need to add a border around it, a frame, so to speak, to properly balance the bed.  I want to use a fabric that I already have so I will likely use white…but I’m not yet sure.  I will then use a pantogram to quilt it, keeping it simple so the pattern of the fabric is not lost.  I might keep this in mind at MQX, which is coming up.  I will be adding to my pantogram library while there!

So I’m really happy with my wandering, but I need to get back to my original intentions tomorrow because I have planned projects awaiting.  Happy quilting!
